Culligan Regeneration Time: How Long It Takes and When It Starts

Check Culligan regeneration duration by model, understand the 2 a.m. start time, and distinguish a queued cycle from one running now.

Culligan gives 70–90 minutes as a general regeneration duration, but your model’s manual and programmed settings are the better reference. Some Culligan manuals list shorter average cycles. On the controllers discussed below, 2:00 a.m. is a regeneration start time, not the cycle length—and it does not mean the softener must regenerate every night. Culligan’s regeneration guide

Keep these three measurements separate:

Measurement What it tells you
Duration, in minutes How long one complete regeneration takes
Start time, such as 2:00 a.m. When a delayed regeneration begins
Frequency, in days or treated gallons How often regeneration is needed

How long does a Culligan regeneration take?

For the HE downflow models with Aqua-Sensor or Soft-Minder covered by owner’s guide 01021076, Revision H (November 2019), Culligan lists these average recharge times:

HE model, by resin-tank diameter Average duration Salt dose used for the listed average
9-inch downflow 78 minutes 4 lb
10-inch downflow 67 minutes 6 lb
12-inch downflow 62 minutes 7 lb
14-inch downflow 76 minutes 12 lb

These figures use a 10-minute backwash. They are specification examples, not instructions to copy those settings onto another unit. The same guide lists 68 minutes for the 9-inch HE upflow model at a 2 lb salt dose and 57 minutes for the 10-inch HE upflow model at a 6 lb salt dose, both using a 5-minute backwash. HE owner’s guide, pages 6–7

Identify the model and regeneration design before choosing a reference time. “Culligan HE” alone is not enough to select the correct specification. The guide has a separate HE Municipal specification table; do not apply the table above automatically to that model, an Aquasential Smart HE or a different controller generation.

Do not shorten backwash or brine/slow-rinse settings simply to finish sooner. Those are treatment-stage settings, separate from the clock setting. For the stages and what to observe, see our regeneration-cycle guide.

What does the 2 a.m. setting mean?

The Medallist owner’s guide specifies 2:00 a.m. as the default regeneration start time for delayed operation. The HE guide likewise describes “REGEN TONITE” as regeneration at 2:00 a.m. or the preset time. Medallist guide, page 17; HE guide, page 24

Choose a low-water-use period that accommodates your unit’s full cycle. Check the controller’s current clock and AM/PM indication first if regeneration begins at an unexpected hour.

Frequency is a separate question. Depending on its configuration, an HE system can call for regeneration from metered gallons, an Aqua-Sensor signal, a backup interval, a day-of-week setting or a manual command. Changing the start time does not change those triggers. HE guide, page 23

Changing the start time on a Medallist controller

For the controller covered by Medallist guide 01020482, Revision F (March 2020):

  1. Use STATUS to reach “tod”, the current time-of-day setting. Adjust the flashing minutes with + / −; press REGEN to switch to hours and adjust those if needed. Check AM/PM.
  2. Press STATUS to advance to “tor”, the time-of-regeneration setting.
  3. Use + / − to change the start time in 30-minute increments.
  4. Press STATUS to save and advance. Continue with STATUS through the remaining settings without changing their values. At the blank display, press STATUS once more to return to the service-time display.

Leave salt dosage, backwash and brine-draw settings unchanged. These instructions are controller-specific; do not assume they apply to an HE or Aquasential panel. Medallist programming instructions, pages 17–18

Is it waiting, running or overdue?

On the HE controller above, “REGEN TONITE” means queued, while “REGENERATING” means the cycle is running. On the Medallist, a steady REG indicator means regeneration has been signaled; a flashing indicator means regeneration is underway. HE guide, page 23; Medallist guide, page 21

Time the cycle from its actual start—not from when you requested it. If it continues well beyond the expected duration, remains on one stage or displays an error, record the model, elapsed time and display message for service. Do not repeatedly initiate another cycle. If your intention is to regenerate immediately rather than queue tonight’s cycle, use the matching manual and our manual-regeneration checks.
