A “Clack water softener” is usually not one standardized appliance with a fixed capacity, resin type, tank, warranty, or programming sequence. Clack primarily manufactures control valves and other water-treatment components. Original-equipment manufacturers, distributors, and dealers then build complete treatment systems around those components.

That distinction changes how you should shop. The Clack name may identify the valve platform mounted on the mineral tank, but it does not establish how much resin is installed, what capacity is programmed, whether the assembled unit can meet peak household flow, which fittings are included, or who will support the system.

In marketplace language, WS1 generally identifies a control-valve platform, not a complete residential softener with universal specifications. The valve routes water during service and regeneration. The rest of the system may be selected and assembled by an OEM, dealer, installer, or retailer.

The following is a practical identification guide based on the supplied manufacturer, distributor, and seller documentation—not a definitive catalog of every firmware version or dealer configuration.

The WS1EE designation is useful when identifying the controller on Aquatell’s package, but it should not be transferred to every softener carrying a Clack valve. Likewise, WS100 should be treated as the name of the retailer’s assembled product unless documentation for another system establishes otherwise.

Water eStore’s seller-authored programming material distinguishes WS1CI or WS1CC controls, WS1EI controls, the original five-button WS1, and WS1TC controls. It also associates a five-button face with the original WS1 and a four-button face with the WS1EI. These clues can help with identification, but button count alone does not establish firmware, application, or dealer programming. The unresolved WS1TC question

The supplied descriptions disagree about WS1TC applications. Some seller instructions describe WS1TC as a control for backwashing carbon or sediment filters. Distributor-hosted documentation says WS1TC and WS1.25TC controls can operate a downflow-regeneration softener or a filter and provides separate startup resources for those applications. The distributor-hosted WS1TC documentation presents both softener and filter resources.

Neither description supports saying that WS1TC is always filter-only or that every WS1TC can be used with any softener. The installed application, internal configuration, injector, cycle programming, and matching manual determine what a particular unit is intended to do.

Before relying on programming or service instructions:

  1. Photograph the label on the valve or control housing.
  2. Photograph the normal display and every front button.
  3. Count the buttons.
  4. Determine whether the tank contains softening resin or filter media.
  5. Record the dealer or package name separately from the valve model.
  6. Find the manual matching the exact controller and application.
  7. Confirm unusual settings with the seller or professional who configured the system.

A retailer’s package name is not a substitute for the valve label. A familiar-looking control face is not enough to prove that an online programming sequence applies.

What should be included in a complete Clack-based softener

A complete system requires considerably more than the control head. Before ordering, ask the seller to identify every component in writing rather than accepting “complete Clack softener” as a sufficient description.

It says its 1.0- and 1.5-cubic-foot systems ship with media loaded, while larger systems ship with separately boxed media and a filling funnel; its electrical description specifies a standard 110V supply. The Pro Series package instead lists Aldex 10% crosslink resin, a salt grid, safety overflow float assembly, bypass, and 1-inch connections, with control power described as 24 VAC. That listing also reports configuration-dependent service flow of 13 to 21 gallons per minute at a 15 psi pressure drop and backwash requirements of 1.3 to 7.5 gallons per minute. Resin volume is not grain capacity

Keep these specifications separate:

  1. Resin volume, usually stated in cubic feet
  2. Resin cross-link percentage, a characteristic of the resin bead structure
  3. Advertised grain capacity, a nominal package label
  4. Programmed usable capacity, the operating value entered into the controller

A “48,000-grain” listing does not by itself establish the capacity that should be programmed for economical operation. The operating target depends on the resin volume, selected salt dose, water chemistry, reserve strategy, and dealer configuration.

Likewise, 10% cross-linked resin and a particular grain label describe different characteristics. One cannot be inferred from the other.

If the resin ships separately

A separately shipped media load changes the installation work. Ask who will be responsible for:

  • Centering and protecting the distributor tube
  • Loading any underbedding
  • Adding the resin without allowing media into the distributor
  • Installing the upper basket
  • Mounting the valve correctly
  • Performing initial startup, backwash, and rinse
  • Checking for leaks or media loss

If the seller’s warranty depends on professional installation, clarify that requirement before attempting assembly.

Why one listing may say 110V and another 24 VAC

Electrical descriptions can refer to different parts of the power arrangement.

Do not assume that explanation applies to a particular shipment. Verify the equipment label and supplied transformer, including input voltage, output voltage, plug type, cord length, and location requirements. Use the power equipment specified for the controller rather than substituting an adapter because its plug happens to fit.

Before paying, obtain written answers about whether the quote includes:

A lower equipment price may not remain lower after freight, missing fittings, installation, and startup are included.

How to size a Clack WS1 system without relying on the grain label alone

No specific Clack-based softener should be recommended from household count or advertised grain capacity alone. Occupancy can help estimate demand, but it does not establish hardness, soluble iron, peak flow, water pressure, or the drain’s ability to accept regeneration flow.

A larger nominal label is not automatically a better fit. An oversized package can still be programmed poorly. An undersized mineral tank may struggle with peak flow even when a basic grain-load calculation appears adequate.

A provisional load calculation

For comparison purposes, start with:

Daily hardness load = daily household water use × hardness setting

Then estimate the capacity needed between regenerations:

Comparison capacity = daily hardness load × planned days between regenerations

Reserve must also be considered. Depending on the controller and dealer configuration, reserve may be calculated automatically or entered through another setting. Do not add reserve twice.

Worked example

Assume a household uses 300 gallons per day and the applicable hardness setting is 20 grains per gallon:

  • Daily load: 300 × 20 = 6,000 grains per day
  • Seven-day load: 6,000 × 7 = 42,000 grains
  • Eight days of load, representing seven days plus one additional day for comparison: 6,000 × 8 = 48,000 grains

This arithmetic does not prove that a “48,000-grain” package is appropriate. The next questions are:

  • How much resin does the package actually contain?
  • What usable capacity does that resin provide at the selected salt dose?
  • How does the controller handle reserve?
  • Can the complete tank, resin, valve, bypass, and plumbing meet peak flow?
  • Can the water supply and drain support the required backwash?
  • Does the water contain iron or other conditions that change the treatment design?

The example is a screening calculation, not a final equipment recommendation.

Seller guidance is not a universal Clack rule

SoftPro’s setup guide recommends programming approximately 80% of rated capacity, using roughly 10 pounds of salt per 30,000 grains, and adding 5 grains per gallon to the hardness setting for each 1 ppm of soluble iron. Those figures are seller-authored starting points, not universal Clack specifications. Iron should not be handled by blindly changing one controller number. Confirm whether the iron is soluble, whether other forms or contaminants are present, and whether a softener is the appropriate treatment method for the tested water.

Service flow and backwash flow are separate checks

Service flow is the rate demanded by showers, faucets, toilets, appliances, and other fixtures while the system treats household water. The assembled softener must support realistic simultaneous demand without unacceptable pressure loss or hardness leakage.

Backwash flow occurs during regeneration. It depends on the valve configuration, drain-line flow control, media, and tank diameter. The water supply must deliver that flow, and the drain route must accept it.

Passing one test does not mean the system passes the other. A unit may satisfy ordinary household demand but lack adequate backwash flow at the available pressure. Conversely, it may regenerate successfully while causing excessive pressure loss during peak use.

Advertised sizes show variety, not suitability

A conventional softener primarily targets hardness. The presence of a Clack valve does not establish that the system will solve iron, manganese, sulfur odor, sediment, chlorine, acidity, or another water-quality concern. The final choice should be based on the complete tank-and-resin configuration—not merely the valve’s maximum capability or the largest grain number in a seller’s menu.

Metered regeneration and WS1 programming basics

A demand-metered softener tracks treated-water use and regenerates according to measured demand, programmed capacity, and reserve logic. A fixed time-clock control regenerates according to elapsed days or selected calendar days, whether or not the available capacity has been used.

Demand operation can follow changing household consumption more closely, but only if the meter works, the settings are correct, and the system is properly sized. Metering does not compensate for an inaccurate hardness setting or unrealistic programmed capacity.

The retailer-listed Pro Series WS100 includes meter-immediate, meter-delayed, and time-clock-delayed modes. That capability belongs to the listed package and should not be assumed for every WS1-family controller.

Depending on the board and dealer configuration, menus may include:

  • Time of day
  • Raw-water or compensated hardness
  • Programmed capacity

The same seller guide uses 2:00 a.m. as a recommended regeneration time and presents example cycle values such as an 8-minute first backwash, an approximately 60-minute brine cycle, and an 8-minute second backwash. These are seller examples, not factory defaults for every WS1-family installation. The guide identifies the compatible sequence and its example settings.

If the buttons, display, valve label, or application differ from the guide, stop and locate the matching manual. Do not experiment with button combinations or copy a cycle sequence from a visually similar controller.

Regeneration time should suit the household and other treatment equipment. When several tanks are installed, stagger their regeneration schedules so they do not backwash simultaneously and exceed the available supply or drain capacity.

Do not shorten cycles merely to reduce water use

Backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, rapid rinse, and refill times are part of the treatment design. Appropriate durations can depend on:

  • Water pressure
  • Brine concentration
  • Water temperature
  • Water chemistry

If regeneration appears to use excessive water, first verify the controller, cycle sequence, injector, drain control, programmed capacity, salt setting, and regeneration frequency. Follow the matching manual or obtain qualified service rather than reducing cycle times without confirming the design.

What happens after a power outage?

The distributor-hosted WS1TC documentation says programmed values are retained in nonvolatile memory while the time of day must be reset after a power outage. After a prolonged outage:

  1. Check the displayed time.
  2. Confirm the delayed regeneration time.
  3. Look for a queued regeneration notice.
  4. Verify visible hardness and capacity settings.

A safe model-verification sequence

Before changing advanced settings:

  1. Photograph the valve label.
  2. Photograph the display and button arrangement.
  3. Count the buttons.
  4. Identify whether the tank is a softener or filter.
  5. Record every existing setting.
  6. Locate the exact matching manual.

Aquatell displayed configurations from approximately $1,049.99 to $1,799.99. Its page also contained inconsistent availability language: general ready-to-ship wording appeared alongside sold-out indicators for individual options. Verify the exact capacity and configuration rather than relying on a page-level stock message. Check Aquatell’s current configuration, price, and availability details.

The Pro Series WS100 listing displayed approximately $1,169 to $2,219. It listed a five-year control-valve warranty and ten-year tank warranty for that retailer’s package. The same seller described licensed-professional or water-treatment-facility purchasing conditions and stated approval and store-credit terms for certain online orders. Read the warranty by component

A control-valve warranty does not automatically cover:

Do not interpret one retailer’s licensed-professional condition as a rule that applies to all Clack-equipped systems or every market.

Who provides support?

Clack says it cannot provide detailed system support or pricing directly. It recommends contacting the professional who sold the equipment or locating a qualified water-treatment professional through the Water Quality Association. Before choosing a package, confirm:

  • Who will perform the initial programming
  • Who can diagnose the system locally
  • Whether model-specific replacement parts are stocked nearby

  • Whether local technicians recognize the exact controller

Other sellers characterize Fleck as having broader parts and service availability, while also advising buyers to check local supply. Actual availability is regional: a widely distributed platform is of little benefit if the required part or technician is unavailable where the system is installed. Comparisons also need equivalent models. Placing a Clack WS1 against an older Fleck 5600 does not necessarily compare current valves intended for the same flow, tank diameter, or application.
